hi~

this is my step by step.. using 3d model base to start a painting. i used XSI, but any 3d software will do.

the water and stones on the tower are textures i applied in photoshop.

the first pic is what i did in 3d.
the rest are in photoshop.

Try to download 3dMAx and find a crack on the internet. Maya is fine too, however, I'd suggest 3dMax for buildings.

3dsmax is a bitch to work and sometines takes 6 months of training I've only had 3 (as a class in highschool 2 years ago) maya sounds interesting...

I must say I've never worked with any 3d programs before, let along 3dMax, but was forced to do it and I've learnt a lot in just three weeks. I can only say that you should give it a try. If you don't like it then don't, as this is all to your own preferences.
Also, Maya is (I'd say) really good for organism etc., but not really for buildings.

Speaking out of experience professionals gave me. Take it, ignore it. Up to you. Good luck with it and have fun. :)

Nice work,
But could you do the same without 3d model? cause it feels kinda awkward that an artist needs a 3d program to draw nowadays...

of course :)
i used 3d here coz the perspective is so awkward. and also, i suck at perspective.

well, you can learn perspective with the aid of 3d, so that when you'll be good(which, I think, you are) you won't need it.. :)
