hades and persephone 1 by sandara hades and persephone 1 by sandara
uhmmmm since people are asking...

these 2 are hades and persephone, just prior to him abducting her. (thats' why he's staring like that)

i don't know if i'll finish up the pic... this roughwork thingy seems to be growing into a new style. i think i'll go back and fix his cloak though... it looks funny.

Everytime I'm skimming through pictures on here and I see this one I find myself stopping to stare. I love your work.
Actually I recently had to pick a picture from online to write a quick essay about how the artist was speaking through a picture be it a story or double meaning, ect. I...hope you don't mind but I ...Ehm  used yours as my inspiration

Hades looks a bit like Thranduil.
A lot like Thranduil.
Based on when this was posted, I guess it's the other way around.

2009... wow. That's such a long time, but I remember this piece all too well. It's one of the most cherished and loved artworks ever for me. Love your new piece so much, I always have your interpretation of those two in mind, when reading stories of them... <3 Lovely.

Persephone was the daughter of Demeter, the goddess of agriculture. Once Persephone was abducted to the underworld, she hated it so much that she cried and sat round depressed all day (do understand this). Demeter went to the underworld to discuss the matter with Hades, the god of the underworld. They decided that she was allowed to leave the underworld for  6 months every year, so she would stay half a year in the underworld and half a year in  the real world with her mother. This is the greek myth explaining the seasons while marvelously entwining a love story as well.

That's interesting. I always read the reason she (Persephone) stayed was because she ate some pomegranate seeds which bond her to the underworld for those few months. Demeter was so upset about Persephone being gone that she made all the plants wither and die, and that's how winter and fall came. So many different versions of the same story, huh?

Aw, its nothing to worry about. The family trees and stories of Greek gods and goddesses is all over the place, it's nothing. :D (Big Grin)

To me this shows a more sympathetic version of the God of the Underworld. Hades in the classical myths was always depicted as this dark and foreboding character not because he was inherently evil like modern takes of him, but because this is the god of an aspect of life no one wants to explore or be involved with. In fact, it's kinda funny how whenever there is a story with Greek elements, the main villain is most of the time Hades while in comparison to his younger siblings Zeus and Poseidon, he's one of the more level-minded and even fairer gods.

After all, Poseidon is famous for raping Medusa in Athena's temple causing her to turn into the infamous monster while Zeus is famous for countless upon countless acts of adultery, two of the most famous cases was when he transformed himself into a swan rapes a woman named Leda and of course when he fathered Hercules but did nothing to prevent his torment at the hands of his wife Hera. Yet the worst thing Hades has ever down was kidnap Persephone and made her his wife, something that seems honestly tame in comparison to most of the things his brothers did and he did it for a more deep reason then just lust: He was honestly in love with her and being the God of the Underworld, the one place that even the gods would avoid entering without a good reason, made him feared by the other gods.

So seeing these two seeing each other and setting forth the events that will eventually lead to the creation of the seasons is not only inspiring but amazing as well. It could have been easy to depict Hades as this demonic overlord-like being but to see him while threatening and intimidating look human shows that you put a lot of thought into this. And of course Persephone looks perfect as well, being the goddess of Growth and Spring she reminds me of a fay or another woodland spirit and her bright, colorful nature contrasting with Hades's dark and bleak aura makes her stand out even more sharping the contrast of the two.

In other words it is one of the most amazing pieces on this site.
