trying out some background painting...

Critiques

:iconchimera-tears:
this is a very strong piece and you stated that you were experimenting so i'm going to skip the cordial points and get straight to the nitty gritty.

Cities aren't quite the concrete jungles that artists make them out to be. very subtle hints of varying colors in the cityscape could have made this piece even stronger. I would have liked to have seen the effects of exposure to prolonged sunlight and dry rotting on the colors of the city as it aged.

I agree with the previous critiques in that more erosion and wear would be expected as well as more variety of color in the foliage.

dust/particles in the air and a thicker haze in the first panel that transitioned to sharper cleaner air would have been a good touch.

i recommend using more human artifacts other than signs and automobile's which don't carry as much of an emotional weight to the viewer.

all in all, a very stunning piece for an attempt.

Well, as it seems your goal here was to show a passage of time, I have one simple critique. It seems that the only indicator of the passage of time is the moss and other plant growth, and while yes, as mentioned in the comments, mother nature does repair herself, I think a few more indicators of the passage of time would make this even more successful as a piece. For example, on the sign on the right hand side of the image, perhaps show it increasingly more crooked, or the ramp or broken piece of street near the center show it having crumbled a little more. Perhaps use a few softer shadows on the defined corners to show some erosion from weather as well. Sometimes it's the small things that make a work even better.

I love the way the city looks more like a scar before nature starts to come back and "repair" the damage left by an uncaring people, reminds me of wall-E a lot :)

I love this picture, so much it makes me jealous, not just because of how fascinating your skills are into making this image but it just makes me think that....
I dunno.....
Perhaps its just that I don't like life modern anymore. I like life like this.. I just want the world left alone and untouched. I want it natural. Like here in this picture. For doomsday, I desperately want the world ending up like the two pictures at the end...instanly :(
Then, it would take ages to put it back together because people would find the world too beautiful to be harmed. They'll fall in love with its nature. And if they tried to return the planet it to its original condition before the change (ie, the way we find the earth now), it would take YEARS to make it back to the way it was. I want Earth left alone. Mother Nature is getting angrier and angrier each year. She's been driven mad. Shes giving us storms and bad, unnatural weather. If we left her creations alone, she'll calm down. But, if we don't stop harming her masterpieces, she is going to continue attacking civilsation and then eventually, her powers will be lost and then the world may once again, freeze over. Her powers will take a very long time to recover to start restoring our planet together and we will then realise our mistakes while we are suffering without her aid to guide us through misery. So please, I beg you people, leave her alone. She has been helping us for many, many years. And what do many people give her in return....? Well? What?

War and dirty air,
Grief and no Relief,
only creates another affair."
Dirty bastards, you should be ashamed of yourselves..

I seriously hope my message is making sense...

Baw, I can't even COMMENT on critiques without a subbie? I was going to tell =Chimera-Tears (mostly as a joke) that she obviously hasn't seen Washington DC. That actually looks very close to what it might look like in some parts if it were allowed to go into ruin. It's true, cities like San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles, and other major cities in the US (I haven't been to any major cities in other countries, so I can't speak for them), are all much better-organized, but we don't call the highways getting into DC the "Mixing Bowl" for no reason >_>;

Other than that, however, I agree with everything (s)he said: if it were meant to be a polished piece, it could use a little more work, but as a trial piece, it's purely amazing! ^_^

wow, this is really beautiful! Did you paint the piece once and edit the colors, either with adjustments or painting, or did you actually paint the whole thing three times?
